Father Francisco López de Mendoza Grajales was one of four priests recruited to join Pedro Menéndez de Avilés’ 1565 Florida expedition. Father López served as fleet chaplain, and on September 8, 1565, he celebrated the first Catholic Mass in the newly-established settlement of St. Augustine, Florida.
This font was created from Father López’s original memoir of the Menéndez expedition, housed in Seville’s Archivo General de Indias (AGI Patronato 19, R. 17). Written in his own hand, López’s account describes the transatlantic voyage, the storms that almost destroyed the fleet, and the dramatic weeks that followed the founding of St. Augustine, as Spanish and French colonists struggled for a foothold in northeast Florida.
Thank you for supporting La Florida! The font installation process depends on a number of factors, including the type of computer you have. YouTube is a great source of information on how to install new fonts to a variety of PCs, for Macs, and other computers.
The shape and size of the letters found in historical documents varied widely. As such, the spacing for these authentically historical fonts also fluctuates from style to style, with many of the letters extending beyond one or two lines. For best results, we recommend double spacing when using these fonts.
