El Aventurero Font Web and Desktop Combined

This font is inspired by the remarkable life of William Augustus Bowles, British Loyalist, adventurer, and self-proclaimed Commander in Chief of the Creek nation. A native of Maryland, Bowles joined the Maryland Loyalists Battalion when he was just fourteen years old. A year later, in 1778, the young Loyalist was transferred to West Florida. There, his life of adventure and intrigue began. Within a year, Bowles was dishonorably discharged from British service, accused of insubordination. He then spent the next few years living among the Lower Creek, whom he claimed adopted him.

After the American Revolution, Bowles attempted to place himself as a central intermediary between the British and Creek nations. He launched regular assaults and Spanish Florida, both at land and sea. But his list of enemies grew. In 1803, a group of Upper Creek leaders captured the elusive Aventurero and delivered him to Spanish officials in New Orleans. Bowles was transferred to Cuba where he died two years later.

The letters that make up this font come from documents housed in Spain’s Archivo General de Simancas, which describe Bowles’ efforts to undermine Spanish control of West Florida, as well as the Spanish Crown’s attempt to recruit his services on its behalf.

The letters used to create these unique fonts varied widely, and the spacing for many of them extended beyond one or two lines. In order to see the letters fully, we recommend that you set your spacing to double when writing in one of our fonts.
